“To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield”- Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I wanted to participate in Intercordia to challenge myself, to learn a new language, to learn from others and to make meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds than my own.

Kaytee Fisher, St Thomas More College @ University of Saskatoon
Placement: Bajuco Aplastado, Dominican Republic

I chose Intercordia, or rather, Intercordia chose me because I truly love learning from others in every aspect that I can. Living in solidarity together is something that I believe we must all strive to achieve and Intercordia allows for me to transfer that notion from experience into my daily life as well as other’s lives. Intercordia is also an incredibly humbling experience and I believe as fortunate and privileged individuals living in North America we all need to be brought back down and allow for ourselves to be taught how to live simply and learn from that simplicity.

Peter De Sanctis, University of Toronto
Placement: Gisenye, Rwanda

The opportunity to live in a developing country was the main reason I was drawn to Intercordia. In university I developed an academic interest in development and I wanted to learn more during an experience abroad. I was especially interested in living with a host family to learn from them and experience living with them.

Edil Ga’al, University of Toronto
Placement: Gisenye, Rwanda

I chose Intercordia Canada because I appreciated the opportunity to live in solidarity with those I am working with. This experience has afforded me the space to build deep and lasting connections with my community in Gisenyi. Without Intercordia Canada, I would not have the same enriching and immersive placement.

Noelle Gauthier, University of
Toronto
Placement: Gisenye, Rwanda

The focus of Intercordia on being in community with families as opposed to being the Western “helper” really spoke to me. I knew that taking this summer to participate in Intercordia would have a greater impact on me and be more beneficial in my life than any internship or summer course would be…Perhaps the most significant part I find about Intercordia is the focus on each person’s individual experience and that we will all receive something different from our placement…there’s an emphasis on allowing the placement to change and shape you without any judgment. I really like how there is so much support around this endeavour and there is no right or wrong experience.

Delainey Guigon, St Thomas More College @ University of Saskatoon
Placement: Peguche, Ecuador

I chose to participate in Intercordia this year to gain experience in another country, to step out of my small comfort zone. This program will help me grow as a person and to understand other cultures.

Brendan Hunter, St Thomas More College @ University of Saskatoon
Placement: El Cruce, Dominican Republic

I joined Intercordia for the style of trip that it is. While I have been frustrated with the ideas behind mission trips or events overseas that presume some western omniscience, I’ve found Intercordia to embody much needed mutual learning. I am not going to the Dominican Republic to teach the locals, I am going to the Dominican Republic to live like a local and hopefully to learn all the value that their lifestyle provides.

Kelsey Krueger, St Thomas More College @ University of Saskatoon
Placement: L’Arche Cape Breton

I joined Intercordia because I want the opportunity to expand my worldview past Saskatoon. I want to form new connections with people I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet, and grow as an individual. I hope to gain a greater appreciation for my life and my community.

Placement: Santa Barbara, Cotacachi, Ecuador

Initially what drew me to the Intercordia program was the desire to travel to the global south, but when I came to the orientation meeting to learn more about Intercordia, it was the program itself that interested me so much. The idea of bridging the gap of diversity through living and working together excites me to my very core and I can’t wait to see all that my Intercordia experience has in store for me!

I was really drawn to Intercordia’s mission and after a bit of online searching I found that I was particularly attracted to a placement in the Dominican. I’m very passionate about environmentally responsible practices, sustainability and conservation so having the opportunity to be involved with the Federación de Campesinos Hacia el Progreso in the Dominican, all while experiencing another culture first hand, is something I’m incredibly excited and grateful for.

Placement: Gisenye, Rwanda
When I joined the Intercordia course, it was the workshops that truly drew me in. Coming on weekends for hours to reflect and share with classmates I had only just met was beautiful. I appreciated being drawn to places of vulnerability and getting to build interpersonal connections at an institution that in a lot of ways does not fost that type of atmosphere. For once in the academic year, I felt seen in my experience with Intercordia; I felt I’d actually been a part of a community, not simply one that said it was…I felt human and not like a machine, even in moment that I made mistakes.

James Povolonis, University of Toronto
Placement: Gisenye, Rwanda

I was drawn to Intercordia because of its combination of professional and personal growth. I felt that my degree has become overly theoretical so this placement seemed like a perfect compliment and way to develop in non-academic ways. I look forward to forming relationships, learning better way to communicate, and strengthening my French.

Placement: Ilumán, Ecuador
I chose to participate in Intercordia this year because I realized that I would never get an opportunity like this again.  It has always been a passion of mine to volunteer and help out in the community and I thought it would be an opportunity of a lifetime to help in a community in Ecuador. I also thought that having the chance to learn from the people of Ecuador may have a positive impact on my learning experience.

I am so happy to be a part of Intercordia 2017 to share in a new learning experience in Rwanda and gain an understanding of a new culture.

Jillian Turton, St Thomas More College @ University of Saskatoon
Placement: El Botao, Dominican Republic

I joined Intercordia because, as a Modern Languages student, I was eager for the chance to be immersed in the language and culture I’m studying. The more I learned about the work we will be doing the more excited I became to be a part of an organization like Intercordia. I’m looking forward to the whole experience!
